Gammelbacka stream: WATERDRIVE Case Area in Finland

Image

The main drainage channel of Storänsbäcken ditch / Gammelbacka  stream (Finlandia) is a typical case, not renovated during decades. The bad condition of the main channel complicated the works of farmers, because floods and wetness delayed sowings, hampered harvesting, deceased the crop yields and ruined the soil structure.

We present experiences of implementing a holistic approach to restoration of reclaimed areas that focuses on agricultural production development and environmental protection as possibly multidimensional. This approach involves working with farmers, Drainage corporate bodies, local authorities, advisory bodies and experts team.

Catchment-scale implementation of holistic water management probably guarantees the best possible result for both drainage and soil structure improvement and minimization of nutrient losses to waterbodies taking into consideration biodiversity, water quality and fishery.
