How to estimate the value of water?

Image

Estimating the contribution of agriculture to the use of freshwater resources is often based only on the amount of water used directly (e.g. for irrigation). Calculations should also take into account rainwater that is used to produce food.

In the presentation, we identify opportunities to reduce the water footprint of crop production by green (rainwater use), blue (water drawn from surface and groundwater for irrigation) and grey water footprint (water used to dilute agricultural pollutants). In addition, a way to include agricultural water in economic calculations by expanding the direct surplus account to include the estimated cost of water has been proposed.
