Västervik: WATERDRIVE Case Area in Sweden

Image

The municipality of Västervik (Sweden) has a long coast and a large archipelago in the Baltic Sea. In 2017, the Local Action Plan to Reduce Nutrient Losses in order to reduce the eutrophication of the Baltic Sea was approved. The Plan identifies a number of mitigation measures that should be applied in agricultural areas (e.g. structural liming, filtr ditches, two step ditches, phosphorus ponds, wetlands and controlled drainage). The measures were matched to the identified problem, and their location was selected as optimal in the catchment area.

The idea of "Doing the right things in the right place" inspires all partners in the Waterdrive project. Experiences from the work of a catchment officer in cooperation with farmers and landowners in implementing the action plan are presented.
